Gorilla Trekking Packing list for Rwanda and Uganda

If you have ever thought of having a gorilla trekking safari, here is a list of what you need as a gorilla trekking packing list. It is for your protection, comfort and pleasure for your trip. Some travellers have referred to gorilla trekking as a once in a lifetime experience. It is unusual, unique and accidental experience.

Waterproof hiking boots

This should be the first one on your Gorilla Trekking Packing list. Trekking gorillas requires hiking in the forests where gorillas live, and thus can have moisture or even rain some times. Therefore, depending on the season or time of the year, you require to wear a pair of boots that is waterproofed. Boots also enable you to navigate in the rough terrains that can be slippery and muddy at times.

Long sleeved shirts/sweaters and pajamas

Navigating in the forests where mountain gorillas habit means passing through shrubs and bushes and thus good to cover all your body. This applies to all the destinations like Bwindi Impenetrable, Mgahinga Gorilla and Volcanoes national parks.

Rain jacket

Mountain gorillas in live in forests and thus rain can come anytime thus a must on your Gorilla Trekking Packing list. There are months of the year like June to September when there is no rain. However, other months, it can rain any time of the day. Note that the rain jacket should not be heavy because you require to walk for some long distances depending on where the primates are that day.

Sun glasses and hut

This will protect you from the tropical sun shine which is likely to be hard on you depending on the time of the year. During dry season you will need to protect yourself but may not be the case in wet seasons. Wet seasons in East Africa is mainly in the months of January, March to May and October to December. In this season the sun is not as scorchy as in dry season of June to September.

Camera and extra battery

Remember to put off your flash light of your camera so that you do not scare away the gorillas. Since it may take longer to find the gorillas, you are advised to carry extra battery for your camera so that you do not miss any moment uncovered. If you are using your phone as a camera, you may not need extra battery but make sure that before you leave your room, it is fully charged.

Water battle

Hiking might require energy especially in hilly areas. Therefore, it is advisable to carry a bottle of water so that you can quench your thirsty while you enjoy your trekking. One bottle can be enough since the experience is done in the morning when water consumption is not much.

Other requirements

You will need other items on your Gorilla Trekking Packing list like mosquito repellent, anti sun cream. Remember to have a walking stick to manage the slippery terrain among others. You should inquire from your guide so that you do not carry unnecessary items and be able to walk lite.
