New Adventure in Gishwati-Mukura National Park Rwanda 

Gishwata-Mukura is a new national park, the fourth national park in Rwanda established in 2015 in the western part of Rwanda in the districts of Rutsiro and Ngororero. This is another indicator for the country to position itself as the leading tourism destination in East and central Africa. The park covers an area of 1,039 Sq. KM and is formed when Gishwati and Mukura forests were combined.

Best time to visit Gishwati-Mukura Park

The best time to visit the park is June to September, though the park is open throughout the year. Gishwati-Mukura enjoys temperate weather unlike other parks like Volcanoes national park. The best time to visit the park is during dry seasons from December to February and June to August because of the optimal conditions like the dry terrain for hiking. During the rainy season from March to May and October to November there is a lush backdrop for wildlife and thus good time but not the best for the visit. On the other hand, you can have cultural experience throughout the year.

Activities to do at Gishwati-Mukura national park

Hiking; With the diverse flora and fauna, you can enjoy nature trails where the view is breathtaking. The trail can lead to the view of Rwenzori mountains in Uganda. This is a guided walk and is spiced by experienced guides.

Birding; With more than 232 bird species like bearded vultures, black bee-eaters, mountain quails and many more can easily be sighted in the park. Therefore, the park is a birding haven in East Africa.

Other activities in the park are mountain biking and swimming among others.

Diverse attractions in the park

The merge of Gishwati and Mukura forests birthed a haven of biodiversity and thus harbored diverse wildlife such as; red river hogs, bushbucks, serval cats, tree hyraxes, and black-fronted duikers among others. The park is home to different primate species like chimpanzees, baboons, golden monkeys, L’Hoest’s Monkeys, vervet monkeys, blue monkeys, and black and white colobus monkeys

Apart from Gishwati-Mukura National Park Rwanda is a diverse country with both savannah and forested national parks. These parks are all diverse and have different attractions.

Nyungwe National Park is a home to Primates especially chimpanzees and is a haven for chimpanzee trekking. It is also known for canopy walk in the forest with the longest canopy bridge in East Africa.

Akagera National Park is home to the big 5 animals; Rhino, buffalo, elephant, leopard, and lion. The park is also famous for its boat cruise experience on Lake Ihema.

Volcanoes National Park is home of mountain gorillas and golden monkeys. Being located in the Virunga volcanic mountains, the park shares attractions with Mgahinga gorilla national park in Uganda and Virunga national park in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
